The Zachęta National Gallery of Art — Zachęta Narodowa Galeria Sztuki — is one of the most significant institutions for contemporary art in Poland. The aim of the gallery, located in the centre of Warsaw, is above all the presentation and promotion of contemporary Polish art. Beyond that, the gallery has established itself internationally through numerous temporary exhibitions of well-known artists from abroad.
The Polish word zachęta can be translated as encouragement or incentive, and goes back to the Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych w Królestwie Polskim, the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, founded in Warsaw in 1860.
