Lama
Pigments & acrylic resin on canvas · 100x100cm /2010
The glowing, almost aggressive red of the background stands in extreme contrast to the meditative calm of the Lama. It stands for existential threat, for political suffering and for decades of oppression of Tibetan culture. The torn surface and the deep shading of the face make clear that faith and spirituality act here as a shield against a loud, dogmatic and often violent outside world. The portrait becomes a universal emblem of peaceful resistance and unbending spiritual identity.
