A garment as if made of gemstones: many tropical weevils wear armour that under the microscope looks set with millions of opals, emeralds and sapphires. These are tiny photonic crystals in their scales, refracting the light. Nature does not squander its finest splendour on the large creatures; it hides it on the back of a beetle in the undergrowth.
