In the rock the sacred animals of the Andes awake to eternal life. They tell of the snake that guards the secret knowledge of the earth, and of the indissoluble bond with the ancestors. The Inca believed that the rock itself lives — as the memory of those who went before them. The petroglyphs are the visible scars of that spiritual connection, through which the force of the forebears flowed into the present.
