The feeling of shame at nakedness is an entirely natural, deeply rooted human reaction. It is mostly not an innate feeling but learnt social behaviour, shaped strongly by culture, upbringing and one's personal surroundings. Sigmund Freud saw shame primarily as a psychic defence and a reaction formation of the ego, directed against repressed infantile wishes — in particular against scopophilia and exhibitionism.
